Assistant Lecturer Ban Samari Attia gave a lecture entitled (Biodegradation of Crude Oil Using Two Types of Blue-Green Algae Anabaena variabilis and Oscillatoriaamoena)
The lecture touched on the process of biodegradation of crude oil using types of cyanobacteria that were isolated from the Doura refinery. Polluted water samples were collected from the biological treatment unit and the final disposal unit to the Tigris River, which were then analyzed to estimate a number of physical and chemical parameters. These variables were used to determine the characteristics of the Daura Refinery waste, as it will be thrown into the Tigris River after treatment. The results indicated that the values of some variables were outside the limits permitted by the Iraqi environmental determinants, while the results of the values of other variables, such as temperature, biological oxygen requirement, and the pH function, were Within permissible limits.
