Between Threat and Neglect: An Awareness Lecture at the Environmental Research Center

As part of its cultural season activities, the Environmental Research Center organized a scientific lecture entitled: “Environmental Pollution and Its Impact on the Environment, ”delivered by Assistant Lecturer Ola Hamed Mahmoud, with the attendance of faculty members, researchers, and individuals interested in environmental issues. The lecture addressed environmental pollution as one of the most serious crises threatening all forms of life and existence in the modern world, emphasizing that humans are the primary contributors to pollution through uncontrolled activities, rapid population growth, and lack of family planning—all of which intensify environmental challenges. The speaker highlighted that many Iraqi cities are currently facing growing environmental problems. The expansion of major urban centers, increasing population density, the spread of industrial zones, and the rise of low-income informal settlements have all contributed to the worsening of pollution in various forms, including air, water, soil, noise, and visual pollution. The lecture stressed the need for increased community awareness and the importance of scientific and institutional collaboration to mitigate the effects of pollution and protect the environment in line with the goals of sustainable development.
