A lecture on afforestation
Coinciding with National Afforestation Day, the Environmental Research Center held two lectures. The first, titled “Afforestation in Iraq: The Challenge and Solutions,” was delivered by Dr. Muayad Naseer Muslim. The lecture discussed the importance of afforestation, which is one of the main solutions to address the environmental challenges facing Iraq, including scarce water resources, uncontrolled urban expansion, and a lack of environmental awareness. Regarding solutions that can be used to address desertification and environmental displacement, sustainable afforestation and agriculture strategies can be implemented. Choosing appropriate tree species for afforestation in Iraq is also important for ensuring the sustainability of environmental projects and reducing water resources.
The second lecture, titled “The Ecological and Environmental Role of Fungi in Sustainable Agriculture,” was delivered by Assistant lecturer Nouris Kazim Rasan. It discussed fungi, which are an important part of nutrient cycles in sustainable ecosystems for animals and plants that share the same habitat. Fungi interact directly with other organisms in beneficial and sometimes harmful ways, in addition to their environmental and ecological role, which improves soil, enhances nutrient absorption, and increases disease resistance
